Damaged bike

Tragedy struck this past Memorial Day weekend when a Brooklyn driver lost control of his car and struck a traffic median, then a light pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene; one passenger was rushed to Brookdale Hospital and the other, a 19-year-old woman suffering from leg and hip injuries, was deemed to be in stable condition by the police officers at the scene.

The officers at the scene report that there was no sign of criminal activity involved in this crash. No other details have been released about the accident.

  • 20% of fatality victims were bicyclists;

Of these victims, 208 were adults, and 13 were children. Some victims’ names and ages are unknown.

Seeking Monetary Compensation for Injuries or a Death from an Auto Accident

If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident or you have recently lost a loved one to a car crash, you may be entitled to seek monetary compensation for any of the following damages:

  • Medical bills;
  • Funeral bills;
  • Lost wages due to time spent out of work;
  • The loss of the deceased’s projected lifetime salary and assets;
  • The loss of the deceased’s non-monetary contributions to his or her household; and
  • Auxiliary needs related to an injury, such as the need for a wheelchair or cane while recovering.

A wrongful death claim is a type of personal injury claim. In New York City, the statute of limitations for a personal injury claim for injuries sustained in an auto accident is three years from the date of the accident. For a wrongful death claim, the statute of limitations is two years from the date of the victim’s death. This means that once the appropriate time limit passes for your type of claim, you are no longer entitled to seek monetary compensation for your losses. This is why it is so important to begin working with an experienced auto accident attorney as soon as you can after your accident.
